The annual event attracts around 350 competitors from around the country and is regarded as a good indicator for potential national standard competitors. TJC sent a squad of eight players and returned with three gold medals, two silver medals and a bronze.
“Smashing last year’s results was only part of the icing on the cake,” said a delighted chief coach Chris Bowles. “The real accolade was winning the trophy.”
The club lost narrowly by just four points to Pinewood Judo Club, regarded by many as the UK’s premier judo club. Receiving the trophy and standing tall on the rostrum was TJC’s senior coach Dick Marcroft.
“This is as a result of the dedication and hard work that this man has put in over the years and it seemed only fitting for him to receive the trophy on the club’s behalf,” said Bowles.
Meanwhile down in Worthing, two members of TJC were fighting at the Sussex Closed Championships in preparation for the inter-county championships in May. Brother and sister James (16) and Elizabeth Draper (13) were both in outstanding form and won all of their contests with the maximum score of ippon to take a gold medal in the –55kg and –52kg categories respectively.
