Sporting elite honoured for outstanding achievements
The Young Sports Personality went to
Tonbridge Judo Club's rising star Enrico Atkinson. Eleven-year-old Atkinson is
already top of in the country for his age and weight after winning a gold medal
at judo's prestigious 2008 British National Championships.
At his first national standard competition, a mere year ago, he won a silver
medal at the National Judo Championships in Thetford – a stunning achievement
for his attempt at an event of this calibre.
Atkinson was over the moon to have picked up the accolade and praised the club
and its head coach, Chris Bowles.
"I am really pleased to have won the award," he said. "I never could have done
it without the help that I get from my coach, Chris and all that the club does
for me.
"I will be looking for sponsorship in the future for my career and I would like
to thank everyone who voted for me."

Hailing the success of the Sports Awards,
sports editor Glenn Garrett paid tribute to the sporting talent on show.
"Not only did we have one of the greatest British sportsmen of all time handing
out the awards, we had a room full of dedicated individuals and teams, who
deserve to be in such exalted company.
"These awards are only in their third year but you can see by the quality of
winners, the number of nominations and the overwhelming number of votes that
they have captured the imagination of the public.
"I'd like to thank Salomons for putting on such a wonderful ceremony and I'm
sure the awards will be back bigger and better next year."
