Welcome to Tonbridge Judo Club

One of the oldest judo clubs in Kent, Tonbridge Judo Club celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2007 and is seeing a return to its former glory days when it was producing world class fighters.

The club is run by Chris Bowles, a 6th Dan and qualified BJA coach, who first joined the club at the age of five. He went on to become British Open champion in 1978 and 1980, a European silver medallist and represented Britain at the Moscow Olympic Games in 1980.

Tonbridge Judo Club now has more than 100 members, starting in age from four years old, and its competitive players are once again starting to see success at an international level.

Tonbridge Judo Club welcomes players of all standards to its dojo (or training hall) just off Cannon Way in Tonbridge. There are Play Judo classes for children aged from 4 -7 years to introduce them to the fundamentals of judo. Junior Judo is aimed at children aged 8 -12 who can choose to start progressing through the grading system denoted by coloured and banded belts.

Youth and adult classes are for players aged 13 years upwards. There are also classes for competitive players. For more details please see contact information.

Judo is an ideal sport for all ages and the British Judo Association grading system is designed to ensure that the next goal is realistic and achievable with effort.  It also ensures that all judo players can compete with contestants of a similar ability.

As judo can be a tough combat sport, Tonbridge Judo Club ensures there is strict discipline with emphasis on safety, hygiene and etiquette. The many benefits of judo include increased fitness and stamina as well as offering the best self-defence training at close quarters of any sport.
